Week 20, FervorosoFirst! Students are busy at Math Explore WorkStations and other WorkStations at The Academy of Hope. We are currently beginning new Social Studies discovery, including using technology to video-conference and interview a student living in Washington State who experienced the epic snowstorm this past week (students were able to view the massive snow amounts and submit questions), and upcoming is a video-conference call in Arlington Heights just outside Chicago at an elementary school there with another first grade who we are pen-pals with this year; mastering measurement and addition/subtraction skills while exploring new concepts in Math; delving into Chapter Books in Reading; reviewing Word Families, word endings, blends, story mapping and statement/question identification and composition in ELA, and oh so much more!!! Exhausting , but fun and so educational:)

These are fresh new photos of the 2012 Sand Sculptures, miraculously made for inclusion by the national media for tomorrow evening's Fox News Channel GOP Presidential Debate to be held right here at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center (we live just up the street, so it was easy to come on over and get these wonderful pics). In a few of them, you see Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s likeness; in a couple of the photos of the Presidential hopefuls, seated in front of their likenesses, are the actual sculptors themselves! One sand sculpture depicts a "welcome to Myrtle Beach" variety. How educational too:)

Week 19 At the Academy of Hope! FervorosoFirst is exploding with engagement, action, adventure and...lots of hard working, as usual! But a great thing it is. WorkStations are inclusive of Reading, Writing, Making Words, Math Explore, Legos, TableTop Explore, Numbers Explore, Construction, Clipboard and WordWorks Stations, with ten total rotations occurring daily. There are three rotations in the morning and seven in the aternoon. How very busy we are!! If your child is coming home tired, he/she has definitely earned it:) Next week we'll see parents on Tuesday in the late morning, early, mid and late afternoon and early evening for Parent/Teacher Conferences to discuss your child's strengths and progress in grade one at AOH. We'll cover topics relating to what your child needs to be ready for second grade next academic school year as well. Because we are observing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Holiday, there is no school Monday. Next Wednesday will be the first day of the school week. We will not have a new spelling vocabulary list due to this, but rather concentrate on reviewing those ever-so-much-harder vocabulary, as well as word families for five Dolch Word Lists for Grade One. Math will begin to focus more heavily on subtraction and review of time to the quarter hour, as well as more algebraic and geometric applications. This nine weeks we are focusing on Social Studies, as last nine weeks we explored Science concepts. Thanks for submitting your Snack list sign-ups as well as your times needed for conferencing. If you haven't submitted a sign-up as of yet, please check your child's Homework Folder for updates on scheduling for Conferences times, as every family has an assigned time for Tuesday; student names have been filled in for specific Snack Dates. Some dates are still open for those who want to contribute. Many thanks for your continued support and assistance. You help us make your child's day a little sunnier! Blessed weekend:)
