Literacy Lab @ AOH

Students who come to the Lab have wonderful opportunities to mix reading and writing with learning new skills and strategies about how to work out tricky text-- through reading lots of Familiar books, through Word Work, Vocabulary Building, being introduced to New Texts and through developing further fine motor skills-- and cementing the learning of new letters and words.

For Kindergarten and 1st Graders, this is accomplished through hands-on learning exploration using Wikki Stix and Wikki Stix Pattern Cards, through using the Water Wizards, Gel Board and manipulation of Magnetic Letters to make and break apart almost-known vocabulary.

For 2nd and 3rd Graders, more time is spent on adding strategic behaviors at the point of difficulty in both reading and writing text to help themselves become more fluent and efficient.  This "frees the students up" to delve into more creative reading and writing behaviors like adding a "voice" to the reading or writing non-fiction or fiction stories about subjects of interest, because the students aren't now having to work so hard on the actual reading and/or writing!

As always, the above is still the Goal to which all ages of students at the Literacy Lab aspire to attain:)
